Maldives Gas will temporarily reduce the amount of cooking gas it puts in cylinders starting 7 November.

The company said the measure is needed because of rising global gas prices and difficulties importing supplies. Under the temporary limits, 10 kg cylinders will be filled with 7 kg, 22 kg cylinders with 14 kg, and 45 kg cylinders with 31 kg.

Customers will continue to pay the current price per kilogram for the actual quantity they receive. The company described the step as temporary and said it is working to improve import procedures so normal fills can resume.

A longer-term project to expand bulk storage is also under way. Once completed, the facility is expected to hold a three-month national supply of gas.

Maldives Gas previously limited sales and reduced cylinder fills in March amid disruptions linked to conflict in the Middle East. It raised prices for 22 kg and 45 kg cylinders in June.

The company is a subsidiary of the State Trading Organisation. Officials have said the government is coordinating with suppliers to stabilise availability and avoid further price increases for households.
