Maldives Gas will temporarily reduce the quantity of cooking gas filled into cylinders starting Saturday, citing rising international prices and difficulties securing imports.

Under the new arrangement, 10kg cylinders will be filled with 7kg of gas, 22kg cylinders with 14kg and 45kg cylinders with 31kg. Customers will continue to pay the existing per-kilogram rate based on the actual weight supplied. The company said prices per kilogram will not rise.

Maldives Gas described the measure as temporary. It said the government is working on expanded bulk storage capacity that would allow the country to hold up to three months’ supply, reducing exposure to short-term import disruptions.

The company previously limited sales and reduced fill volumes in March amid Middle East market disruptions, and raised prices for larger cylinders in June.

Officials have not given a timeline for when full-capacity fills will resume.
