Minister of Economic Development and Trade Mohamed Saeed has announced that the forthcoming Maldives Expo 2026 will be the largest commercial, industrial, and creative exhibition ever staged in the country, featuring unprecedented participation from domestic manufacturers and international trade delegations.

Speaking to state media on Tuesday, Minister Saeed stated that planning for the national trade exhibition has entered advanced operational phases, with the government aiming to use the platform to showcase export-ready Maldivian goods, digital services, and regional artisanal crafts.

Industrial transformation and enterprise focus

Unlike previous national commercial fairs, Maldives Expo 2026 is designed as a structured business-to-business and international trade convention. The event will incorporate dedicated thematic pavilions covering boatbuilding, creative arts, processed marine products, information technology, renewable energy systems, and culinary industries.

Minister Saeed emphasized that the expo forms part of the administration's broader economic diversification agenda to reduce over-reliance on traditional tourism:

"Maldives Expo 2026 will differ fundamentally from any trade event held in the past. It will connect our small and medium enterprises directly with regional procurement networks and showcase the technical capabilities of Maldivian producers," Minister Saeed affirmed.

The ministry plans to invite commercial trade attachés and retail distributors from South Asia, Southeast Asia, and the Gulf Cooperation Council to explore bilateral supply arrangements.

Fostering youth and island entrepreneurship

Special exhibition spaces and subsidized stall rentals will be allocated to island councils, women’s development committees, and youth-led tech startups to ensure representation from every atoll.

The Ministry of Economic Development noted that the expo will also host seminars on e-commerce logistics, intellectual property protection, and export quality standardization. Authorities intend to establish the expo as a biennial international fixture that positions the Maldives as an emerging commercial and logistical hub in the central Indian Ocean.
