Economic activity in the Maldives increased by 2.4 percent in August compared with the same month last year, according to the Maldives Bureau of Statistics.

The Monthly Indicators of Economic Growth (MIEG) showed a 5.4 percent rise from July 2026. The figures are measured at constant 2019 prices to remove the effect of price changes.

Financial services contributed the most to annual growth, adding 1.4 percentage points as activity in the sector rose 21.9 percent. Real estate added 0.8 percentage points and wholesale and retail trade 0.7 percentage points.

Fisheries was the largest drag, with activity falling 65.6 percent year-on-year and reducing overall growth by 2.1 percentage points. The sector’s share of total economic activity dropped from 3.2 percent to 1.1 percent. Manufacturing subtracted 0.2 percentage points.

Accommodation and food services, the largest sector at 23.1 percent of measured activity, grew only 0.7 percent annually, mainly due to an increase in tourist bed-nights. Construction was 10.4 percent higher than a year earlier.

On a monthly basis, accommodation and food services expanded 10.6 percent from July, while construction declined 9.7 percent and fisheries fell a further 35.6 percent.

The data point to modest annual growth supported by financial, property and trade activity, with the sharp fisheries contraction offsetting part of the gains. The estimates are subject to revision as more information becomes available.
