Maldives and Pakistan have exchanged a memorandum of understanding on fisheries cooperation as part of the package of agreements concluded during President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s state visit to Islamabad.
The MoU was exchanged between Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs of Pakistan Muhammad Junaid Anwar and Minister of Economic Development, Transport and Trade of the Maldives Mohamed Saeed. It establishes a formal framework for strengthening bilateral cooperation in the fisheries and aquaculture sector.
The document forms one of 20 memoranda and agreements covering a wide range of fields, including defence, maritime security, information technology, healthcare, education, agriculture, tourism and air connectivity. Both leaders witnessed the exchange ceremony at the Prime Minister’s residence.
Fisheries is a cornerstone of the Maldivian economy, and officials have indicated that the new understanding could support knowledge exchange, sustainable resource management and potential trade or investment links. Pakistan has also signed separate agreements on agriculture and trade in food commodities through its Trading Corporation and the Maldives State Trading Organisation.
The fisheries MoU is expected to be followed by technical discussions on practical areas of collaboration once the high-level visit concludes.
