The High Court has ordered a Turkish construction firm to pay MVR 25 million in unpaid taxes related to a large infrastructure project.
The decision concerns obligations under the goods and services tax regime applied to construction works. Authorities had pursued the amount after the company failed to settle the dues within the required period.
The case highlights ongoing efforts by the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority to recover outstanding taxes from foreign contractors involved in public and private developments. Similar disputes have arisen in other large projects where tax offsets or payment schedules were contested.
The government has stated that all foreign and local companies must comply with tax rules regardless of project size. The High Court’s order is expected to be enforced through standard recovery procedures if the firm does not settle the sum promptly.
Construction activity remains a significant part of the economy, particularly around Male’ and Hulhumale’, and tax compliance by contractors continues to be monitored closely by revenue authorities.
