The Housing Development Corporation has seized the land occupied by Riveli Beach Restaurant because of unpaid rent.
The action follows the failure to clear outstanding lease payments. HDC manages significant land and property assets in the greater Malé area and enforces lease terms as part of its mandate.
Details on the amount owed and the future use of the site have not been disclosed. The seizure is consistent with procedures applied to other defaulting tenants on corporation land.
Business operators have previously raised concerns about lease costs and enforcement practices in the capital region.
