Food inflation in the Maldives fell to 5.6 percent in August, according to the latest monthly statistics released by the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA).
In Malé the food inflation rate stood at 5.8 percent, down from a peak of 7.8 percent recorded in June. Across the atolls the rate was 5.4 percent in August, after rising through April to July.
The monthly series for the atolls showed April at 5.8 percent, May at 6.0 percent, June and July both at 7.1 percent, and August at 5.4 percent.
While food prices eased, inflation in transport services remained elevated at 9 percent in August. The rate had reached 10.2 percent in April.
MMA noted that the slower pace of price increases in food and other essential categories helped bring the overall inflation rate down to 1.8 percent. The authority described the movement as a positive development for household costs.
The figures are based on the consumer price index compiled by MMA.
