An audit has found that the Maldives Customs Service continues to struggle with the recovery of unpaid duties and fines.
The report identified significant outstanding balances that have not been collected within the expected time frames. Weaknesses in follow-up procedures and limited enforcement capacity were cited as contributing factors.
Customs generates a substantial share of government revenue through import duties and related penalties. Persistent arrears reduce the effective yield and place additional pressure on other revenue streams.
The audit recommended stronger tracking systems, clearer escalation protocols and closer coordination with the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority on overlapping cases. Authorities have acknowledged the findings and said steps are being taken to improve recovery rates.
Import volumes remain high, particularly for fuel, construction materials and consumer goods. Efficient collection of duties is therefore critical to the overall fiscal position.
